Gene Bowen (a.k.a. Eugene Bowen) is a singer/songwriter based in California. He was working with Harold Budd, James Tenney, Daniel Lentz, Wolfgang Stoerchle and John Baldessari at California Institute of the Arts in the 70s. He plays guitar, keyboards, synthesizers and sings. He has contributed to Harold Budd's recordings in one of the landmark albums of the ambient style, Ambient 2: The Plateaux of Mirror (EG / 1980 with Brian Eno), The Serpent (In Quicksilver) (Cantil / 1981), Abandoned Cities (Cantil / 1984), etc. Recently he collaborated with John Densmore -the drummer of The Doors- at Hen House Studios.

"Bourgeois Magnetic", originally released under the name Eugene Bowen, was a 12-inch 45 rpm record, and the second release on Budd and Bowen's own label Cantil Records back in 1981. It's the only album that has never been reissued in albums Budd is involved. This album is influneced from composite art like Dada and Fluxus, including some references from movie, art culture and poetry. Budd's beautiful piano (tr1, tr3, tr5), filtered synth work (tr2) and groovy song with Berimbau (tr4) in one album. Although the music is firmly in the tradition of the early Ambient movement, its originality and freshness have not diminished over the years. A hidden gem.

ジーン・ボーウェンは、カリフォルニアのsinger/songwriterで、ハロルド・バッド、ダニエル・レンツ、ジェームズ・テニー、ジョン・ボールデサリーといった70年代から西海岸で活躍してきたアーティストと共に活動してきた。ダダやフルクサス、民族音楽から影響を受け、カリフォルニア・インスティテュート・オブ・アートを拠点に、特にハロルド・バッドと共に様々なプロジェクトに関わり、バッドとメキシコで初めて電子音楽のコンサートなども開いた。
アンビエントの名作、ブライアン・イーノとハロルド・バッドの「Ambient #2: The Plateaux of Mirror」では、録音や作曲で大いに関わっていて、バッドのその他のソロアルバム、「Serpent (In Quicksilver)」「Abandaned Cities」、Sub Rosaからリリースされたコンピでも参加。94年には、ソロアルバム「The Vermilion Sea 」をリリース。近年は、The Doorsのドラマー、ジョン・デンスモアと仕事をしている。
'81年にリリースされたこのアルバムは、オリジナルは45回転／12inchのミニアルバムで、バッドとボーウェンの自主レーベル、Cantil Recordsからの2枚目の作品 (1枚目は、バッドの「Serpent (In Quicksilver)」、3枚目は、バッドの「Abandoned Cities」) である。(オリジナルは、「Eugene Bowen」の名義だった。)バッドの関わっているアルバムの中で唯一、復刻されていなかった幻の名盤だ。
このアルバムは、バッドらしいシンプルで美しいピアノがフィーチャーされており（track1、track3、track5）、乾いた砂のようなシンセのアンビエント曲(track2)と、ビリンバウが特徴的なグルーブ感あふれる歌モノ(track4)とどれも個性的。環境音楽ムーヴメントが起こった初期の作品だけあって、そのオリジナリティーや新鮮さは時代を超えてもまったく色褪せていない。
